To keep your computer running smoothly, you need to do regular maintenance of cleaning out unnecessary temporary files, cookies, and the other bits of leftover data that build up and slow your system down.
Most people use Microsoft's Disk Cleanup utility, since that's built-in to Windows. But have you ever noticed that it doesn't remove all the temporary files? One thing that always bugged me was when I was saving a new PDF file, and I could clearly see that there were a ton of old temporary PDF copies in the folder. Those temp copies of eBooks I've downloaded take up a lot of computer space! I've tried cleaning out those files manually, but it's time consuming and a little intimidating because I wasn't entirely confident that I knew what to delete.
For the last 3 months, I've been using a free utility that I read about in PC World magazine. It's called CCleaner and it works beautifully. Those pesky PDF's in my temp folder? Gone. WinZip files I don't need? Gone. It takes out everything that Disk Cleanup does--and everything it should. I especially like the ability to select the website cookies I want to keep for convenience, and the unnecessary ones I've collected from all the web surfing I do--and it remembers my approved cookie sites each time, so I don't have to log in again. It also works super fast. Get it for free, then use it once a week.
