I was reading a post on TreeHugger.com this morning that really inspired me. The topic, "Biomimicry," is the science of studying nature's processes for ideas and solutions to our problems. Be design, nature is both economical and effective. In short, we're talking about sustainable development.
There is an inspirational interview that I recommend you read. It explains biomimicry in simple terms with examples of things we're already learning from nature. Don't let the lack of pictures on the article page make you think it's boring. The images are in the storytelling.
Biomimicry Explained: a Conversation with Janine Benyus.
In question #7, she opens the topic of how new business models are being formed from some of these concepts. In particular, I love this quote:
"I never thought I'd see the day, but it's true: the Birkenstocks are teaching the suits."
The idea of integrating sustainable development concepts into the way we run our holistic businesses, right down to the way we manage people and business development (not just being ecologicial) is something I've been meditating on for awhile now. It's not fully formed--more like a calling that has been begun beckoning me. This article on biomimicry is really fueling my inspiration today. We'll have to pick up this conversation again later.
